Getting Started: EO Basics
Research, and More Research
The more I research, and the more I experiment with essential oils, the more I find that there are usually two sides to every EO story. What works for one person may not work at all for someone else, and what clears up one condition can potentially give rise to new health concerns.
With that in mind, the first step on your EO journey should include lots of research from trusted, scientific-based, sources. Most essential oils can be used for an array of purposes, making research very important when narrowing down which oils will work best in your particular situation. This is where EO safety should be your top priority.
Using essential oils according to the instructions given on their labels is an important safeguard. This includes using the recommended dosage, using a carrier oil to dilute your oils when necessary, and avoiding careless experiments. The proper use of essential oils are well documented and many are backed by trusted professionals. Carefully consider your source when doing your personal research.
In addition to a few online blogs and science journals, I recommend the Life Science Essential Oil Pocket Reference. This reference includes information on every essential oil in the Young Living collection, including their Essential Oil Blends. It has many useful and insightful tools for beginning a solid knowledge base for EO use. It is convenient to carry along, and it provides hours of reading for anyone looking to improve their health with EOs.
Your Essential Oil Source
After deciding which type of oils will work best for you, it is important to find a source that provides Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils. Using anything less than Therapeutic Grade is a compromise that could have undesirable side effects. Please see why I trust Young Living as my EO source.
Carrier Oils
Because of their potency, many essential oils require that you use a carrier oil to dilute them. Carrier oils, such as coconut oil or Young Living’s V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex, help to dilute the potency of EOs in order to protect your skin from irritation, rash, and burning. They also make topical application easier and prevent EOs from evaporating from your skin too quickly. This helps to extend your EO supply. There are lots of options available when it comes to carrier oils. And since carrier oils come with their own unique benefits, this is another important area of research.
Look for articles and science journals that list the side effects, as well as the benefits, when researching your oils. You may want to keep notes for each oil and document how and when and for what reason you use them, especially when using essential oils medicinally.

This post offers just a few important tips to help you get started. The information on essential oils seems endless and you will likely want to explore the subject in depth if you are like most people who are discovering the many benefits that essential oils have to offer. The goal of EO use is healing and restoration, so make safety and knowledge your first priority when exploring essential oils. There's something new to learn every day!
